In the old days, we believed that developmentally disabilities were caused by demons or illicit affairs, and we punished those with such afflictions--often times with beatings and occasionally with burnings.
Today we've evolved. We've become more Christ-like and humane. We use "restraint boards, isolation, food deprivation and electric shock" to keep the disabled and troubled in line:
Mental Disability Rights International (MDRI) has filed a report and urgent appeal with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture alleging that the Judge Rotenberg Center for the disabled, located in Massachusetts, violates the UN Convention against Torture.
The rights group submitted their report this week, titled "Torture not Treatment: Electric Shock and Long-Term Restraint in the United States on Children and Adults with Disabilities at the Judge Rotenberg Center," after an in-depth investigation revealed use of restraint boards, isolation, food deprivation and electric shocks in efforts to control the behaviors of its disabled and emotionally troubled students.
Some might think that such treatment is outside the norm and that such a facility would be quickly closed down. But, we've known about the Judge Rotenberg Center for awhile. I posted a story about it in 2006:
The state's highest education-policy board is considering a proposal to stop sending New York school children to out-of-state facilities that use electric shock to treat psychological disorders.
A staff report to the Board of Regents yesterday targets the Judge Rotenberg Center a week after a Freeport mother who opposes the therapy announced she would sue her local school district for sending her son to the Massachusetts school. Experts say no other school in the nation uses mild electric shock to modify students' behavior.

ReplyDeleteThe equation is something like this: profits = understaffing x technological controls. How can they make a buck if they have to act like human beings? It can't be done, my friend. We must join Sauron or no wide-screen TV.
p.s. Let's just hope these kids aren't taken to a MLB game where they might run onto the field.
