Something happens to the vice president (a stroke?), then later the president and the speaker of the House are killed in a freak accident. Next in the line of succession is an African-American. I think they called them Negroes then. A black president? What a far-fetched notion! And there is a movie version of this one starring James Earl Jones.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068912/fdtatehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00556497275110191794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5099635.post-7247832054321775422010-02-14T21:15:22.672-05:002010-02-14T21:15:22.672-05:00Thanks,Dave!

As I remember "Night at Camp David", it was a novel about the President becoming an actual paranoid schizophrenic with grandiose ideas. I think it was a plea for an amendment to the Constitution for presidential succession, which happened not too long after the novel was published. And, no, no movies I can recall of it or "Dark Horse". Thanks for the recommends!

mjs, you might want to consider taking up Yoga.SeattleDanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06985103979828794599noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5099635.post-81146011887456674502010-02-14T04:17:54.170-05:002010-02-14T04:17:54.170-05:00I read quite a few Fletcher Knebel books in my you...I read quite a few Fletcher Knebel books in my youth, awakening an interest in politics. One of the most interesting is "Dark Horse," about a minor liberal politician who unexpectedly wins his party's nomination, runs an unorthodox campaign (for the time) and comes within an eyelash of winning the presidency.

"Night at Camp David," about a president that might be insane, is another winner.

Unfortunately, I don't think there were movie adaptations of either book.fdtatehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00556497275110191794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5099635.post-82630778834669691152010-02-13T23:37:11.299-05:002010-02-13T23:37:11.299-05:00Makemake: so do I, darling. You talkin' about ME?!? Because I don't see anybody else in here. So you must be talking about me..."

Then I remembered that you're a 110% mainly holey patriot, and I realized that was just crazythought.

Reading those snippets from Hofstadter (his name sounds suspiciously Krautish, don't you think?) I was amazed. Here he was writing in 1964, and the sinister, totally evil forces he was describing PERFECTLY matched the Islamofascists that are trying to destroy Western Caucasocivilization. The guy was a seer!

Unless maybe he was one of THEM, and he was just giving as clue to what they would do 40 years later...
