And there are certain mental health problems that are still considered essentially "incurable" in the sense that the urge cannot be removed.

There is a similar problem with treating perpetrators of domestic abuse. In therapy, the abuser may learn to become less physically violent, but by learning more about psychology he becomes better at emotional abuse so that he doesn't need to hit as much.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5099635.post-81959260601415586352007-04-22T19:53:00.000-04:002007-04-22T19:53:00.000-04:00If Pedophiles are mentally ill, why is this even a...If Pedophiles are mentally ill, why is this even a criminal issue? Should this not be medical? What are the possible treatments? Is anyone even looking at this?

Clearly, people are forgetting basic issues. Sickness=Doctors. Crime=Police.

I'm disappointed that this even requires discussion.

Immediately asses the costs of incarceration of pedophiles in US Prisons, and transfer those costs to appropriate medical facilities AND research for treatments.

Conduct similar studies for Paranoid/delusional Schizophrenics incarcerated in the prisons, and execute appropriate transfers.

Its not that difficult. I think this isn't being handled just so people can bitch about the issue.Devil's Advocatehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01048181780456203964noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5099635.post-47054417658259962262007-04-22T17:57:00.000-04:002007-04-22T17:57:00.000-04:00(And there should be an automatic space between po...(And there should be an automatic space between posts, too. It's not 50%, I'm sure - not anywhere near it. Talking about a "high recidivism rate" is totally misleading if it just means 7% instead of 5%.

And speaking as someone who was sexually assaulted as a child, I'd like to know how people justify wanting to destroy someone's life when there is a good chance they can be rehabilitated. My life wasn't destroyed, after all, so why should the punishment be so much worse than the crime?

(Why do the comments under the posts come out in all-caps? It's horrible. And, obviously, they weren't typed that way, because they aren't that way on the "Post a Comment" page. There are many untreated paranoid schizophrenics in the homeless population who refuse medication. Some of them end up killing someone and are then "punished" with the death penalty.

If we grant the "pedophiles are mentally ill" theory, and there's a court hearing with periodic review under a standard of "beyond reasonable doubt" rather than the civil standard of over 50% certainty, and we're careful not to slide down the slippery slope - it might be a better solution than the "publish their home addresses on the web and make it illegal for them to live anywhere" standard we've got going nowRepubAnonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00910850871992862642noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5099635.post-60976416138084197522007-04-22T10:10:00.000-04:002007-04-22T10:10:00.000-04:00I actually favor life long imprisonment for child ...I actually favor life long imprisonment for child sex offenders, excluding statutory rape. Rather than civil confinement, which I agree is an abuse of authority and a violation of the Constitution, just change the penalty. No tolerance. Life without parole for diddling youngsters. Doing that would abolish the sex offenders lists as well.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5099635.post-164221326197756452007-04-22T09:16:00.000-04:002007-04-22T09:16:00.000-04:00You know maybe arresting and inprisoning every ind...You know maybe arresting and inprisoning every individual that "earned" over a million dollars last year to "protect society" isn't a bad idea.
