I have to keep in mind that Sen. Thurmond isn't personally against me or Negroes. I don't always agree with him, but he has to answer to his constituents. He has to do what he was elected to do which is represent his constituents in South Carolina. If you look at the polls, overwhelmingly in South Carolina they are in opposition to the of Voting Rights Act.
My office knows how I feel about these issues, but it?s how I feel personally and it's not my opinion as a professional on the Hill. My job is to support the Senator as he represents South Carolina.
To paraphrase Trent Lott, "We wouldn't have all the problems we have today with elections in Florida if Thurgood Marshall had worked for Strom Thurmond and helped defeat the Voting Rights Act.
