Fast Food Nation

My inner Frenchman is looking forward to seeing Fast Food Nation. He's hoping that it'll affect society in the same way Upton Sinclair's muckraking novel, "The Jungle" did a century ago. That book led to the creation of the Food and Drug Administration.

I'm hoping for something different. I'd like to think that we're a little more sophisticated in post-Reagan America. They'll see this film and be impressed by the way corporations like McDonalds and Tyson have changed the food we consume and they'll come away with a greater love for unregulated capitalism. After all, what could be more beautiful than the rehabilitation of a diseased cow or chicken into a child's Happy Meal. What once smelled of rot and death now brings squeals of delight from little Ben and Carissa.

Sure, it might be the opposite of what those who wrote the book and produced the movie intended, but it looks like some of their marketing people understand the value of flipping the message, at least when it comes to immigration.

Take their innovative use of the Technorati link tracking system for instance. Fast Food Nation's marketing team created lists on Technorati of the movie characters' favorite blogs. Below, I've placed a screencap of an ad and the favorites list they did for Wilmer Valderrama's character, an undocumented alien who works in a meet packing plant. What's his favorite blog? Well, it's CommonSenseAmerica, the internets tubes number one Tom Tancredo and Minutemen worship site.

Yeah, I bet it's big in the immigrant community.
