A conservative nationalist group's highway litter removal project has Frenchmen in Oregon screaming like Bill O'Reilly at a loofah burning. Despite these complaints, the Marion County Commission ordered road crews to erect signs announcing the groups adoption of Sunnyview Road between Cordon Road and 82nd Avenue in Salem Oregon. The signs were immediately torn down by hippies who hate expressions of nationalistic pride.
Hopefully, the County Commission will use the sign's removal as an opportunity to correct a spelling mistake when they replace them. The original signs said "American Nazi Party," while the application states that the group is actually called the "Amerian Nazi Party."
According to Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center, nationalist organizations join in these adopt-a-highway programs as a way to improve the public's perception of them. I think we can help them acheive this goal by making their work more visible.
Highway adopters are required to ensure that their stretch of road remains clean. They'll lose their sponsorship if they fail to do so. Usually, a semi-annual sweep is enough to keep a road fairly litter free. Unfortunately, that means that our nationalist friends are only seen doing their good work two or three times a year. We need to provide them with an excuse to go out there more often.
Now, I'm not saying that we should strew McDonalds wrappers up and down Sunnyview Road. I think we should leave something more interesting for them to pick up. Things like Tom of Finland's drawings of Aryan warriors (not work safe) to remind them of what real Aryan men should look like. Or perhaps pictures of Spongebob or Dora the Explorer to remind them what they are fighting against.
If enough of us do it, the nationalists will be on the road picking these treasures up every day or risk losing their sponsorship. Their visibility will increase a thousand fold.
Thanks to MJS for the tip.
Note: I'm having problems with a vital piece of software. I can't seem to reinstall it. I may need to reinstall my operating system. If that's the case, I might not post anything for tomorrow. Please check back, though, because a reader sent me something good. It should make for an interesting post.
