Learning lessons

Laurel Brown
Utah State Board of Education

Dear Mrs. Brown,

When the Prophet Nephi hesitated to murder Laban and steal his brass plates, the Lord said unto him, "It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief." I was reminded of these words when I read your comments in the Deseret News the other day. Instead of saying, "I'm concerned that if this [AIDS education bill] comes to the fore, (it's) going to open up the can of worms again," you could have just as easily declared, "It is better that fourteen children should acquire HIV than that a whole generation should dabble in immorality." I say fourteen because that is the number of new HIV cases reported among 14-24 year olds in Utah every year.

Some say that mandatory sex education might prompt a drop in that number. I'd be willing to agree, but that's not the issue here. The real issue is pre-marital sex. Kids who are taught about safe sex in school are more likely to practice it in the back seats of their cars. It allows them to avoid the terrible punishments of disease and pregnancy that have served as warnings to so many kids in the past. Give them knowledge about condoms and there is nothing left to stop them from wickedly scrogging every chance they get.

Of course, you already know this. That's why you declined to support the bill.

Heterosexually yours (I state this as a matter of fact to avoid confusion about my orientation--I am not flirting),

Gen. JC Christian, patriot
