A message from my Inner Frenchman

Independent booksellers have a hard time competing with Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and all the other Wal-Marts of the book world. They don't get the extra attention from publishers the big boys do. They don't receive the promotional money to spotlight the latest trash from Ann Coulter or Bill O'Reilly on the tables near the front of the store.

And thank God for that. Thank God, there are still bookstores out there where the owners are motivated by their love of the written word and an insatiable need to share their love with others.

This blog is blessed to have two of those people, SeattleDan and SeattleTammy, as commenters and contributors. I'm personally blessed to have their friendship.

They don't know I am writing this. I hope they forgive me if it embarrasses them, but damn it, I love these people, and I think you do too, so you need to hear this story

Their independent book store, Jackson Street Books, is struggling. Dan and Tammy's labor of love, their dream of helping to revitalize an impoverished part of Seattle while sharing their love for books, is on the verge of collapsing. The high costs of operating a bookstore in the city, coupled with the increasing corporatization of the book industry, is killing them.

They need your business this Christmas season. This is a make or break time for them. You're buying gifts for friends an family now, Why not consider a book from Jackson Street Books. It doesn't matter where you live. Dan and Tammy will ship your order out to you. All you need to do is give them a call or send them an email.

Please give them your business. Why should you be giving your hard earned money to faceless, corporate shareholders, when you could be giving it to a good, caring progressive couple, people who share our beliefs and dreams for a better America.
